Global markets advanced 1.2% in the final week of trading as markets closed out a year of solid gains, up 14.8% for 2020. Despite the headwinds in 2020, markets focused on the positives: optimism over the roll-out of new Covid-19 vaccines and monetary support from central banks.

The major US market indices set record highs over the course of 2020’s final week. Of note, three tech giants – Apple, Amazon and Microsoft – generated 53% of the S&P 500’s total return in 2020, and the IT sector (just one of 11 sectors overall) accounted for almost 70% of the index’s total return.
